It’s not a fun time to be a Houston Rockets fan right now. It was just reported that Kevin Porter Jr. and Christian Wood got into a heated altercation with an assistant coach, John Lucas. It’s not quite known what was said to spark the confrontation. We do know that Lucas called out the two players for their poor play at halftime. Porter instinctively threw something inside the locker room before leaving the stadium entirely.
As for Wood, he stayed with the team throughout the break but refused to sub into the contest in the second half. Lucas had chosen to focus on Wood’s effort specifically in a game that they weren’t losing by much.
The Rockets had kept it close with the Denver Nuggets that half. Though, with two of their best players out they quickly fell into a 22-point deficit and ultimately lost the game.
The coaches on the roster claimed that Porter Jr. was just nursing a thigh injury and that it was the reason for his second half absence. They also said that Wood had broken a team rule and was subsequently benched in the second half because of it. Conflicting reports coming out of Houston right now, we will let you know if any further details pop out about this entire situation. It’s something to monitor.
Will Kevin Porter be punished as well?
The punishment isn’t major. Kevin Porter was suspended for one game by the team. After which he was incredibly apologetic to the fans and coaches when he returned. It was an unfortunate time for Porter to be suspended, as the team battles an eight-game losing streak right now.
The 21-year-old has still been wildly helpful to the rebuilding franchise in a short amount of time. He has averaged 12.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 29 minutes per game this season.
